What Payment Rules does#
- Hide methods for matching carts or customer groups.
- Rename supported methods and move them to the top or bottom.
- Match cart totals, products, customers, address details and the chosen shipping method.
Set up Payment Rules#
- Open Payment Rules in Toolbench and choose Turn on. Choose it as one of your 3 active free modules, or use Premium.
- Review and approve any access request shown by Shopify.
- Create a rule with a clear name, such as Hide COD above $200.
- Choose the conditions and the payment method to target.
- Choose the action and save.
- Test matching and non-matching carts using the relevant country and payment methods.
Settings and behavior#
| Setting or field | What it means |
|---|---|
| When | Conditions on carts, products, customers and addresses. |
| Target | The payment methods affected by the rule. |
| Action | Hide, rename, move to top or move to bottom. |
| Priority | A hidden method stays hidden; higher matching rename or move rules take priority. |
A practical example#
Hide Cash on delivery when the subtotal is above $200. Select the actual method name, then test carts above and below the threshold.
Permissions and data access#
Reads products and manages the payment customizations created by Toolbench.
Access is requested when you turn the module on. Other enabled modules may request their own permissions.
Requirements and limits#
- Outside Shopify Plus, changes to credit-card methods are restricted in some countries, including the US and Canada.
- Methods displayed as logos, such as Shop Pay, PayPal and Apple Pay, cannot be renamed.
- It does not add COD fees, block an entire checkout or hide product-page express-checkout buttons.
- Up to 50 rules with up to 20 conditions per rule, subject to Shopify’s processing limits.
If something is not working#
- A saved rule can still be restricted for the payment method, store plan or country being tested.
- Check the target name, conditions and rule order.
