How to hide cash on delivery in Shopify
Updated
Short answer
Shopify's payment settings can only turn cash on delivery on or off for the whole store. On Shopify Plus, Checkout Blocks can hide it based on the order. On every other plan you need an App Store app built on Shopify Functions, which work on all plans. With Toolbench's Payment Rules you hide COD when the cart subtotal is over an amount you set, or for certain products, countries or customers.
How to do it with Toolbench
Toolbench's Payment Rules hides, renames or reorders payment methods at checkout. It runs as a Shopify Function inside Shopify's own checkout, so it works on every plan and a shopper can't get around it from the cart.
- Install Toolbench from the Shopify App Store, open Payment Rules and click Turn on.
- Add a rule, or start from the built-in example "No cash on delivery for big orders".
- Under When, set Cart subtotal is more than your limit, for example 500. The amount is in your store's currency.
- Under Payment methods this rule changes, set the name contains "cash on delivery". Use the method's name as it's set up in your payment settings, such as "Cash on Delivery (COD)".
- Under Then, choose Hide them, and save.
Other cash on delivery rules stores use
- Hide COD when any item in the cart has the tag made-to-order.
- Hide COD outside certain countries, states or ZIP and postal codes.
- Hide COD for customers tagged no-cod, for example after a refused delivery.
- Hide COD for first-time customers (logged-in customers with no previous orders).
- Rename cash to "Pay when you collect" when the customer chooses local pickup.
- Move COD to the bottom of the list so card payments come first.
Why this happens
Cash on delivery brings in orders that card payments miss, but it also brings fake orders, high-value orders that get refused at the door, and orders for products you can't afford to send back. Most stores want COD for some orders, not all of them.
Shopify Scripts used to handle this on Plus. They were switched off on June 30, 2026, so stores that relied on a payment Script need a replacement.
Your options in Shopify
Payment settings (Settings > Payments)
Cash on delivery is a manual payment method. You can turn it on or off, but not limit it by order value, product, country or customer.
Checkout Blocks (Shopify Plus only)
Shopify's free Checkout Blocks app can hide, rename and reorder payment methods with conditions. It's only available on Shopify Plus.
Custom apps with Shopify Functions (Shopify Plus only)
A developer can build a payment customization Function as a custom app, but custom apps that contain Functions only run on Plus. Public App Store apps with Functions run on every plan.
Shopify Flow
Flow runs after an order is placed. It can tag or hold suspicious COD orders for a confirmation call, but it can't hide COD at checkout.
You only approve what Payment Rules needs
Toolbench asks for no permissions when you install it. When you turn on Payment Rules, Shopify asks you to approve only what this tool uses: read products, and manage the payment rules Toolbench creates.
It doesn't ask for orders, customers, inventory or your payment settings. Each of Toolbench's other tools asks for its own access separately, and only if you turn that tool on, so you never grant access for tools you don't use. Read access means Toolbench can see that data but can't change it.
Before you turn it on
- Rules match a payment method by the name Shopify gives apps. For manual methods like cash on delivery that's the name you set, but for some card gateways it differs from the label shown at checkout.
- Methods shown as a logo, such as Shop Pay, PayPal and Apple Pay, can't be renamed.
- Outside Shopify Plus, rules that hide, rename or move credit card payments don't apply in some countries, including the US and Canada. Cash on delivery, bank transfer and other methods work on every plan.
- Customer conditions such as tags, orders placed and total spent only apply when the customer is logged in or recognized at checkout.
- Each rule tool holds up to 50 rules with up to 20 conditions each.
Pricing
Payment Rules is a free tool. The free plan runs any 3 of Toolbench's 12 free tools at a time, with no time limit and no credit card. Premium is $9.99 a month for all 16 tools at once and starts with a 14-day free trial.
Questions
Do I need Shopify Plus to hide cash on delivery?
No. Checkout Blocks and custom Function apps need Plus, but App Store apps built on Shopify Functions, such as Toolbench, work on every plan.
Can I limit cash on delivery to orders under a certain amount?
Yes. Add a payment rule that hides cash on delivery when the cart subtotal is more than your limit.
Why does COD still show after I set a limit in a COD app?
Some apps apply the limit in the cart or theme, which a shopper can get around by going straight to checkout. A payment customization Function runs inside Shopify's checkout itself.
What replaces Shopify Scripts for payment methods?
Shopify Functions. On Plus, start with Checkout Blocks. On any plan, use an App Store app built on payment customization Functions.
What permissions does Payment Rules need?
Only the ones it uses: read products, and manage the payment rules Toolbench creates. It doesn't ask for orders, customers, inventory or your payment settings. Toolbench asks for no permissions at install, and each of its other tools asks for its own access separately, only if you turn that tool on.
