What Cart History does#

  • Review item additions, removals and quantity changes received from Shopify.
  • See cart outcomes such as ordered, checkout started, abandoned or emptied.
  • Connect carts to customers when identifying information is available.
  • Inspect recorded cart activity behind an order.

Set up Cart History#

  1. Open Cart History in Toolbench and choose Turn on. This module requires Premium or its 14-day trial.
  2. Review and approve any access request shown by Shopify.
  3. Review guest-cart and customer/order history retention settings.
  4. For identification when shoppers sign in, open Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds, enable Cart History and save.
  5. Test with a signed-in shopper who adds an item to a cart, then inspect the recorded cart.
  6. Pin Tools on order and customer pages to inspect linked carts there.

Settings and behavior#

Settings and behavior
Setting or fieldWhat it means
Guest carts30 days by default; configurable up to 90 days.
Customer/order history365 days by default; configurable up to 730 days.
AbandonedA cart with no change or order for 24 hours is marked abandoned.
Theme embedHelps identify signed-in shoppers; without it, identification may occur at checkout or order creation.

A practical example#

A customer orders one item after considering three. If the cart activity was recorded and linked to the order, open Tools to inspect which items were removed before checkout.

Permissions and data access#

Reads orders and customers and uses an app proxy for the optional theme embed. Cart records can include customer links and cart contents.

Access is requested when you turn the module on. Other enabled modules may request their own permissions.

Requirements and limits#

  • Coverage and identification depend on the events Shopify supplies; some express-checkout paths provide limited information.
  • This is not session replay, screen recording or an abandoned-cart email tool.
  • The embed does not identify anonymous shoppers.
  • Orders linked to recorded carts count toward Premium usage; carts that never become orders do not.

If something is not working#

  • Unconfirmed embed status may mean no signed-in shopper has reported a cart yet.
  • For an unidentified cart, check whether the shopper signed in, began checkout or ordered.
  • For a cart left in Waiting after express checkout, contact support with the order and approximate time.
