What Broken Link Redirects does#
- Watch product and collection deletions and handle changes.
- Review affected old URLs in a worklist.
- Create an approved redirect or dismiss an entry.
- Skip renamed URLs Shopify has already redirected.
Set up Broken Link Redirects#
- Open Broken Link Redirects in Toolbench and choose Turn on. Choose it as one of your 3 active free modules, or use Premium.
- Review and approve any access request shown by Shopify.
- Allow the starting scan to record current handles.
- Review URLs detected after deletions or handle changes.
- Choose a relevant destination and create the redirect, or dismiss the entry.
- Visit the old URL and confirm its destination.
Settings and behavior#
| Setting or field | What it means |
|---|---|
| Old URL | The affected product or collection path. |
| Destination | The storefront page you choose. |
| Dismiss | Remove an entry without creating a redirect. |
A practical example#
After discontinuing a product, redirect its old URL to a suitable replacement or collection so visitors can continue browsing.
Permissions and data access#
Reads products and collections and creates the URL redirects you approve.
Access is requested when you turn the module on. Other enabled modules may request their own permissions.
Requirements and limits#
- It watches product and collection changes, not every link on your website or all historical 404s.
- Redirects are not created automatically.
- Shopify may already redirect some handle changes.
If something is not working#
- If a path already exists, inspect its existing Shopify redirect.
- Check that the destination is a valid and relevant storefront path.
