How to create tiered and volume discounts in Shopify
Updated
Short answer
Each Shopify discount has a single minimum purchase requirement, so an offer like 10% off 3 items and 20% off 6 needs a separate automatic discount for every tier, and the quantity price breaks in B2B catalogs only reach company buyers. A discount built on Shopify Functions can hold every tier at once. Toolbench's Discount Rules builds tiered discounts by quantity or by spend, with up to 10 tiers, as a real Shopify discount on any plan.
How to do it with Toolbench
Toolbench's Discount Rules builds a tiered discount as one Shopify discount. Each tier sets a minimum, by number of items or by amount spent, and the percentage or fixed amount off from that point. The discount can come off the matching items or the whole order, and a fixed amount can be split across the items or taken off each one. You choose which items count toward the tiers by product tag, collection, vendor, product type or SKU, or let every item count. It runs as a Shopify Function, so it works on every plan, appears on Shopify's Discounts page, and can be automatic or a discount code.
- Install Toolbench from the Shopify App Store and choose Premium (it starts with a 14-day free trial).
- Open Discount Rules, click Turn on, and approve the access it asks for: managing the discounts Toolbench creates, and reading products.
- Click Create discount and choose Tiered / volume.
- Choose whether the tiers count items or spend, and whether the discount comes off the items or the whole order. Add the tiers, for example 3 items for 10% off and 6 items for 20% off.
- Under Items that count toward the tiers, add a filter such as items tagged bulk, or leave it empty so every item counts.
- Optionally limit it under Only when, for example to logged-in customers tagged wholesale. Choose automatic or a code, the dates, and which other discounts it combines with, then save. It goes live in Shopify straight away.
Tiered discounts stores build
- Buy 3 or more, get 10% off; buy 6 or more, get 20% off.
- Spend $100, get $10 off the order; spend $200, get $25 off.
- $2 off each item tagged case-pack when the customer buys 12 or more.
- Volume tiers only for customers tagged wholesale.
- Tiers that count only one vendor's products.
Why this happens
Volume pricing is one of the simplest ways to raise order value: 10% off at 3 items, 20% off at 6. Bulk and repeat buyers expect it, and stores selling consumables use it to move customers from one unit to a case.
Shopify's discount builder was designed around one threshold per discount. Each discount takes one minimum quantity or one minimum amount, so the tiers end up spread across several discounts that have to be scheduled, edited and ended together by hand.
Your options in Shopify
One automatic discount per tier
Create an Amount off products discount for each tier, each with its own minimum quantity, and leave them set not to combine. When a cart qualifies for several automatic discounts that don't combine, Shopify applies the one that saves the customer the most. It works for two or three tiers, but every tier is a separate discount to keep in step.
Quantity price breaks in B2B catalogs
Catalogs for B2B companies can set volume pricing and quantity price breaks per product. They only apply to customers buying for a company, not to regular shoppers.
Buy X get Y
Shopify's Buy X get Y discount rewards one fixed quantity. It doesn't step up as the customer buys more.
Shopify Scripts (switched off)
Shopify Plus stores used line item Scripts for tiered pricing. Scripts were switched off on June 30, 2026, and discount Functions replace them.
You only approve what Discount Rules needs
Toolbench asks for no permissions when you install it. When you turn on Discount Rules, Shopify asks you to approve only what this tool uses: manage the discounts Toolbench creates, and read products.
It doesn't ask for orders, customers, inventory or checkout settings. Each of Toolbench's other tools asks for its own access separately, and only if you turn that tool on, so you never grant access for tools you don't use. Read access means Toolbench can see that data but can't change it.
Before you turn it on
- Shopify allows 25 active app discounts per store, shared by every app that creates them.
- Each discount holds up to 10 tiers.
- The discount applies in the cart and at checkout. Toolbench doesn't add a tier table to your product pages.
- Customer conditions such as tags, orders placed and total spent only apply when the customer is logged in or recognized at checkout.
- Whether it stacks with other discounts follows the combination settings you choose, as with any Shopify discount.
Pricing
Discount Rules is a Premium tool. Premium is $9.99 a month for all 16 tools and starts with a 14-day free trial. Discounts don't count toward Premium's usage charge, which only counts orders tracked by Order Change History and Cart History.
Questions
Does Shopify support tiered discounts?
Not in one discount. Each Shopify discount has one minimum purchase requirement, so tiers need an automatic discount each, or an app built on discount Functions that holds every tier in one discount.
Do I need Shopify Plus for volume discounts?
No. App Store apps built on Shopify's discount Functions work on every plan. Shopify Scripts, which Plus stores used for tiered pricing, were switched off on June 30, 2026.
Can discount tiers be based on spend instead of quantity?
Yes. Each tiered discount counts either the number of matching items or the amount spent on them.
Will a Toolbench discount show on my Discounts page?
Yes. Each one is a real Shopify discount, listed on the Discounts page with your others. You can also start one from Discounts > Create discount, where it's called Toolbench discount.
What permissions does Discount Rules need?
Only the ones it uses: manage the discounts Toolbench creates, and read products. It doesn't ask for orders, customers, inventory or checkout settings. Toolbench asks for no permissions at install, and each of its other tools asks for its own access separately, only if you turn that tool on.
